SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Historic Preservation & Planning Director, the Senior Historic Preservation Planner ensures that development complies with all codes and regulations of the Town of Telluride and is consistent with the Town’s preservation values through planning expertise. Regular Full Time FLSA Status: Exempt Grade 65 Salary Range: $80,677 - $112,948

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Preservation Planning: Interpret, apply and enforce Town Land Use Code (LUC), Design Guidelines and Standards for Building in Telluride Meet with applicants to provide information and guidance on development applications, local codes, adopted plans, regulations, planning programs and services Evaluate proposals and applications for compliance with the Land Use Code, Design Guidelines, and Master Plan Review architectural plans for compliance with Town policy and planning principles Process applications for Certificates of Appropriateness Monitor projects for compliance with approved Historic Architectural Review Commission (HARC) plans Perform research on property history Perform site walks for signage compliance Develop and assist with special projects and studies that promote historic preservation goals and activities Other tasks and special projects as assigned Boards and Commissions: Attend public meetings, including Historic Architectural Review Commission (HARC) meetings, Town Council and other boards and commissions; make oral presentations Write staff memos and prepare meeting packets for public meetings Assist the Historic Preservation & Planning Director with HARC agendas and review process Provide technical support and training to HARC members Assist with HARC member education and development programs Assist with Town Council to set historic preservation goals Assist with the development and presentation of HARC Annual Report to Town Council Administration: Assist with the application and administration of historic preservation grants Respond to historic preservation inquiries from staff, project applicants, consultants and the public Prepare reports and recommendations for development applications Coordinate project review with other departments Maintain department records in accordance with Town Records Retention Policies Safety: Participate in Town sponsored cybersecurity trainings Work safely to prevent accidents MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education/Experience/Licenses/Certifications): Bachelor’s degree in historic preservation, land use planning, architecture, or related field, Masters degree in historic preservation preferred; at least four (4) years of experience in public historic preservation or planning experience required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Knowledge of: Telluride’s Land Use Code, Design Guidelines and Standards for Building in Telluride; Secretary of Interior’s Standards; Architectural history; historic building practices; planning practices. Skill in: Interpreting technical drawings, construction plans, schematics, topographic maps, and floor plans; problem solving; negotiating and resolving differences; responding to technical inquiries from staff, project applicants, consultants, and the public; critical thinking; written and oral communication; organization and prioritizing. Environmental Factors: Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment and in and around the Town’s buildings and facilities. Varying exposure to outdoor elements and adverse weather. Some evening work required. Physical Factors: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is often required to sit for extended periods of time, frequent walking; may occasionally be required to lift and/or move items weighing up to twenty (20) pounds.
